Getting Started with your Reseller Account Print

Here are some instructions on how to add a hosting account to your reseller account and how to point the domain name there.

Step 1 :  Creating a Package on the Server

A 'package' simply tells the server how much space, bandwidth, mysql databases, ftp accounts, email accounts etc to allocate to the hosting account and the first step is to add a package to the server.  Some clients who sell web space would set up perhaps 4 packages for example Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and have these ready to go.  Others set up a new package for each new domain they add.  Some others just add one package and use that for all the accounts they host.

  • Log into your Web Host Manager using the URL in the Reseller Welcome Email
  • Look for the 'Packages' section in the left hand menu and click 'Add a Package' option
  • Complete the form presented - here are some tips
Package Name
Give your package a name that will be easily identified

Disk Quota (MB):
1024  is 1GB of space so decide how many MB you want to allocate to the package.

Monthly Bandwidth (MB):
1024 is 1GB so decide how much monthly Bandwidth to allocate.  It is best to over estimate here as if an account exceeds its bandwidth allocation the user will get a 'Bandwidth Exceeded' warning.  Your reseller account comes with a lot of bandwidth so there is no issue in being generous.

FTP, Email, Email Lists:
Decide how many ftp accounts your account will need.  Unless you plan to create many ftp users to upload files you may want to keep this low.
Decide how many Email accounts your account needs - you can choose any figure here with no restriction
Email Lists is a rarely used feature most clients set that to 0 or 1 usually

Databases:
Each script you install needs a database.  We would recommend keeping this to a minimum.  The temptation for clients is when they see Softaculous Script Installer is to install script after script to test (there are 260 in there).  The issue is scripts rapidly become out of data and out of data scripts are a major security vulnerability to the hosting account as if clients install many test scripts and do not update them they are at greater risk of being hacked through script vulnerabilities.  Therefore we would always recommend keeping the number of databases low to prevent needless script installs.

Sub Domains, Parked Domains, Add on Domains:
If you need any of these on the hosting account then set a figure here.

  • Once you have completed the boxes click to 'Save' the package

Step 2:  Adding a Hosting Account to the Server

The next step is to actually add the account to the server.  The process is straightforward

  • Click on 'Create New Account'  under the Account Functions left hand menu
  • Enter the domain name in the 'Domain' box without the www
  • The username will automatically complete - you may change it if you like
  • Either type a 'strong' password or generate one
  • The email address is only used if you want to use WHM to email your clients
  • Select the 'Package' you have just created from the drop down list
  • In 99% of cases you can ignore everything else and accept the default settings
  • Click 'Create'  and the account will be created on the server
  • Copy and Paste the resulting account information to a safe place.

Step 3:  Setting the Name Servers

You will have been presented with name servers when you created the account on the confirmation screen.  Simply log into wherever your domain name is registered and set these name servers.  Within a few hours the domain name will be pointing to the server correctly and everything will work as it should.

Accessing Cpanel of the Newly Created Account

You can either visit:  http://www.domain.com/cpanel (where you replace domain.com with the domain name)  once the name servers propagate

Alternatively you can do the following:

  • Log into Web Host Manager
  • Click the 'List Accounts' Option
  • Look at the list of accounts and click the 'CP' link to the control panel.
