Backup Options for Dedicated Servers Print

Backup is critical for all servers and we never recommend deploying a server without a backup solution.

There are a number of backup options available to clients with dedicated servers that we support and they are summarised below.

RAID Array  (not technically backup but protection!)
A RAID Array is not a backup in that if you delete a file from it you will not be able to get it back.  However it does protect your server in the event of a hard drive failure.  Even the basic RAID 1 is useful as your data is mirrored onto a second drive.  If one drive fails the server will stay on line and we can hot swap the drive (in most cases) and the array will rebuild onto the new drive.

Additional Drive in your Chassis
Depending on your chassis and how many drives you have we may be able to simply place an additional single drive into the server.  We can then format that and mount it as /backup.  We can then set your server to rsync (copy) your data to that drive using the cPanel backup feature.  It's the cheapest way to handle backups and the advantage are the backup data are on your server for faster restores if needed.

R1Soft Enterprise Backups
We really love this product as for dedicated servers there is the 'Bare Metal' restore feature allowing us to restore your entire server if needed.  It also can be used to quickly restore individual files and databases back to your server.  R1Soft allows you to fully customise your backups with the ability to set your own backup policy and data retention levels.  It's also very efficient in terms of the amount of storage space used given it is a block based backup system running at disk block level.

When you contact our sales team to talk to them about your server we can answer any questions you may have about the most appropriate backup option for your needs.  Backups are offered as a cost effective service and we never recommend deploying a server without backups.
